, the story of Helen Reddy’s road from Australia to the titular anthem that defined the fight for the equality of women in the 1970s. Directed by Unjoo Moon, the film stars Tilda Cobham-Hervey as Reddy, alongside Evan Peters as her husband Jeff Wald, and Danielle Macdonald as her best friend, the journalist author Lillian Roxon.
“I remember the impact [the song] had on my mother and her friends, and that generation of women who were mostly homemakers and mothers,” Moon said, at Deadline’s Toronto studio today. “When I learned Helen’s story, I wanted to make a movie that had that same kind of feel about it, so you came out feeling like you wanted to change something.”
Moon had met and gotten to know Reddy long before making the decision to tell her story. But for Cobham-Hervey, it was important to find the character without personal bias. “We made a decision quite early on that I wouldn’t meet her beforehand,” she said. “There’s so much footage that we have of her, and she wrote a book, and I had so many stories, and access to so much information.
