NOAA is predicting a near-average hurricane season in the Atlantic.The season runs for the next six months, officially ending on Nov. 30. The Atlantic basin includes the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.
NOAA’s outlook suggests there could be 12-17 named storms , five to nine hurricanes and one to four major hurricanes . Forecasters are expecting El Nino to develop in the Pacific, and the climate phenomenon could shape worldwide weather patterns -- and the Atlantic hurricane season. El Nino typically causes more wind shear in the Atlantic basin, which can tear tropical storms apart before they have the chance to get going.
