Hurricane Fiona continued to dump flooding rain on battered Puerto Rico on Monday morning after making a second landfall overnight, this time on the Dominican Republic.
The hurricane center said strengthening was expected in the next few days, and Fiona could become the season’s first major hurricane on Wednesday. It could peak with winds of 125 mph in 72 hours, according to forecasters.* British and U.S. Virgin Islands: Additional 1 to 2 inches. Storm total up to 10 inches on St. Croix.
* Northern Puerto Rico: Additional 1 to 4 inches with local maximum of 6 inches. Storm Total 4 to 12 inches with local maximum of 20 inches. The hurricane center said catastrophic flooding will continue to be possible, especially for Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, along with mudslides and landslides.* A hurricane warning is in effect for the coast of the Dominican Republic from Cabo Caucedo to Cabo Frances Viejo and the Turks and Caicos.
