As we watch Hurricane Dorian over the next couple of days, turn to the weather experts instead of looking at the weather models
as a major hurricane early next week. It’s scary to watch a looming hurricane threaten land. Knowledge can cure anxiety—but too much information can have the opposite effect. We’re bombarded with so much weather information on the internet these days that it’s hard to tell what to trust. As we watch Hurricane Dorian swirl in the southwestern Atlantic, it’s important to listen to the weather experts instead of looking at the weather models.
However, looking at the computer models to try to suss out hints about the storm's future beyond publicly available forecasts isn’t the way to go. Unfortunately, all those weather models you see on Facebook and Twitter—and even in some television broadcasts—really aren’t all that helpful on their own. Using a weather model without proper training is like arguing with a medical diagnosis by waving a printout from Google in your doctor’s face. Contrary to popular wisecracking, meteorologists don’t just rip their forecasts from the models. Weather models are guidance.
