SAN ANTONIO - Big pattern change ahead with Beryl and another tropical wave coming in behind Beryl by the middle of next week.
Hurricane Beryl is down to 130mph winds with a pressure increase per the Hurricane Center as it continues to slowly weaken. This trend of weakening continues as it moves away from Jamaica then turns west as a big ridge of high pressure over the Southeast deflects Beryl toward the Yucatan. After crossing the Yucatan, Beryl will be down to a tropical storm as it begins to cross the southwestern Gulf. A weakness on the southwest side of the ridge will allow a turn but at this time, the bulk of the model tracks favor a final landfall just south of Texas in Mexico. However, any shift north or earlier turn northwest could bring Beryl into the Texas coast which would increase the impacts.
Brownsville is in line for tropical storm force wind gusts, heavy rain, some coastal flooding from the onshore flow and an elevated rip current risk with high surf from Beryl. The bulk of this arrives late Sunday into Sunday night if planning a trip to South Padre. As for our region, as the storm weakens moving northwest, we'll eventually see scattered showers or a thunderstorm Monday and keep a solid scattered rain chance with cooler temperatures and higher humidity much of next week as the tropical wave behind Beryl moves in too.
