The woman was rushed to a trauma centre in the Toronto area, where she succumbed to her injuries. Investigators described the woman as “elderly” and said she going about her day when the attack happened.Police said they had not arrested or located the man they believed was responsible, nor did they yet know where he was. With the suspect potentially still in the area — and believed to be armed — police said they wanted residents to remain indoors.
The emergency alert, issued outside of Pickering, is an extremely rare step for police to take in either a homicide or stabbing attack. “And I didn’t want to leave it to chance, and so we took some unusual steps here today, where we’re bringing out the resources we need. It’s absolutely important that we locate this individual.”Moreira stressed that while the attack was random, there was nothing to indicate the attack was in any way terrorism-related.
