Denys Shlega, the commander of the 12th Operational Brigade of Ukraine’s National Guard, said that several hundred civilians remain trapped alongside nearly 500 wounded soldiers and “numerous” dead bodies. The destination of the evacuation effort was Zaporizhzhia, a city about 141 miles northwest of Mariupol, Mr Abreu said.
"As the operations are still ongoing, we will not provide further details at this point, to guarantee the safety of the civilians and humanitarians in the convoy," Mr Abreu said of the evacuation. On Sunday, a team with Doctors Without Borders was at a reception centre for displaced people in Zaporizhzhia in preparation for the UN convoy's arrival, if successful.
