Utility workers with Peoples Natural Gas Co. were forced to halt construction of a gas pipeline in Sharpsburg, Allegheny County, recently after human remains were uncovered at a work site in the borough, according to news sources.

The incident took place on June 20, when workers and contractors discovered the remains four to five feet below Short Canal Street while doing excavation work. Once unearthed, they ceased digging and immediately called police, according toThe gas company workers were said to have been digging on private property along Short Canal Street as part of a larger, long-term project to replace old pipelines,Police officers collected the bones and took them to the Allegheny County crime lab.

The medical examiner’s office says it is possible the site is part of a Native American burial ground. As a result, it is going to consult with experts in anthropology and archaeology to help determine the age and origin of the remains.County forensic crews spent an entire day searching the area for more remains, and investigators did indeed find more bones, but they were very small fragments.
