Meng Wanzhou appears in Vancouver court to set extradition hearing date
The Chinese executive whose arrest in Vancouver touched off an international furor is appearing in B.C. Supreme Court today where it is expected a date will be set for her extradition hearing.
Canadian officials, who denied the charge, said they were merely carrying out their extradition treaty obligations with the Americans. On Friday, Canadian justice officials announced that they had issued a so-called authority-to-proceed, formally commencing an extradition process in the court. Her lawyers have not indicated what strategy they might adopt but they face an uphill battle as most extradition requests in Canadian courts result in the accused being extradited. That happens in part because the standard of proof required at an extradition hearing is less than what is needed in a criminal context.
