The library of my small B.C. town was a magnet for a young girl in the late 1960s, one curious about the world and hungry to learn more.

Unbeknownst to me, Blyton, who remained tremendously popular long after her death in 1968, had been falling out of favour since the 1950s, criticized for being racist, sexist and elitist. But back then, no one was protesting those transgressions outside the library doors. There were no angry exchanges beyond the occasional shushing of a chatty patron.

Sometimes, I’ll take my laptop there and write at one of the library’s tables, just to be in the company of others. There’s a rich mix: lots of children, older people poring over magazines and other periodicals in a cozy area flooded with natural light, tutors coaching students, people plugging into the Internet via the library’s desktop computers, a few marginalized folk reading and drowsing in the comfy chairs.

In response to this ugly incident and others , the City of Calgary recently introduced a new bylaw that prohibits protests within 100 metres of an entrance to a library or city recreation centre. It’s intended to protect citizens’ rights to come and go from public spaces without being harassed.Article content
