The creators of a luxurious home office on the set of ‘Hacks’ decode its knickknacks, furniture and art to reveal how they all help tell a character’s storyfamiliar with sneaky subliminal messages in advertising , do they occur in set design?
In a sense, yes. Set decorators and production designers have coined the term “life layers” to refer to details of a set décor that flesh out a character—from a Noguchi coffee table to the items arranged on top of it. Life layers are “a subconscious enhancement of a character, their personal pieces and not a scripted moment,” said Jonathan Carlos, production designer on the HBO Max comedy, “Hacks,” which is up for the Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Program Emmy this Sunday.
