After eschewing a sequel in the late-’80s, rumblings of a follow-up started a decade ago with original director Tony Scott set to return. After Scott’s death in 2012, the film languished until Cruise latched on to a storyline he felt could work.
“No one asked Gene Kelly, ‘Why do you dance?'” Cruise quipped during a masterclass. “I always thought there’s something that I can do and I wanted to push the art form. I thought, ‘How can I immerse an audience into a movie with this kind of action? And how can I entertain them?
