To get a new job with a higher salary, I needed to work 2 full-time gigs. Here's how I balanced both corporate careers and leveraged that for a better role.
Insider spoke with Allison about her decision to work two corporate jobs at the same time and her advice for others hoping to do the same. The following interview has been edited for length and clarity. My primary job was as an email-marketing associate for a merchandise retail company, which I was with for about two years. The second job was a contract role, for five months, as an email-marketing specialist for an apparel company.
Originally, I was interviewing for full-time positions so that I could leave my job with the merchandise retail company. But I was getting frustrated because I was only getting recruiters contacting me about contract roles. Working the two jobs helped me get those technical skills and eventually land the opportunity I have now, which is a level above my previous position.Neither of the jobs knew about each other, and that was very important. I can't put the contract role on my résumé or my LinkedIn because they happened at the same time.Initially, when I started, I didn't know what to expect. I had no way of knowing whether my meetings were going to conflict with the other job's meetings.
Sometimes I had to start working a little bit earlier, but for the most part there was really not a lot of conflict between meetings. I still was able to get all of my tasks done for both jobs, so it's not like anything suffered, but it definitely did get a little bit stressful.
