Sloe gin is easy to make at home and a great thing to make and give as a gift. Make sure you keep a bottle for yourself though...
First wash the sloes and prick them all over with a skewer, or leave them in the freezer overnight. The skins will split open. Place the sloes in a large clear bottle and add the sugar and gin. Shake to get the sloe juice flowing.
Shake the mixture on a daily basis for the next 10 days to two weeks; this will prevent the sugar from resting on the bottom of the jar. After this time, leave the jar somewhere cool and dark for 10 weeks. Shake the jar once a week to enhance the flavour. Once the sloes have imparted their flavour, pass the mixture through a fine sieve. Pour the liqueur into sterilized bottles. Let the bottles mature for two years. It's worthwhile making this each year, so you always have a bottle to enjoy.
Don't waste the sloes; remove the stones and try adding the fruit to ice cream. You could also add the fruit to a cupcake batter for a sloe gin cupcake. Or dip the sloes in chocolate for a berry treat.
