Emergency legislation passed by the D.C. Council expires next month. Council member Brooke Pinto released a set of proposals this week aimed at violent crime.
The most controversial plank of Ms. Pinto’s plan would provide that police do not have to get a warrant to search people who have been released to await trial for violent offenses. Under the proposal, consenting to such searches could be required as a condition for pretrial release. She would also permit searches to be conducted on others under court supervision, including probation or parole.from the chief judges on the D.C.
Wisconsin state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos announced Tuesday that Republicans would allow the nonpartisan Legislative Reference Bureau to draw legislative maps,. A new liberal majority on the state Supreme Court is expected to throw out the current maps, which make Wisconsin the most gerrymandered state in America. Mr. Vos has been threatening to impeach Justice Janet Protasiewicz, whose election this spring flipped control of the court, in a bid to keep those maps.
