Kids have been back to school for over a month now, and parents may be starting to notice that their child is struggling academically.Ken Pilkey, a licensed classroom teacher in Nova Scotia, also owns Teacher Tutor Nova Scotia, based in Halifax, where tutors work with students in person or virtually.

It can present like symptoms of ADHD, such as difficulty making decisions or remembering texts or formulas, explains Pilkey. A lot of the symptoms of COVID education also look like learning disabilities, says Pilkey. He believes some of these symptoms will improve this year with the school environment looking a lot more predictable and with a bit less stress on students and teachers, he adds.If a parent notices their child is struggling academically, Pilkey says their first action should be talking to a teacher or other support professional at the school who can recommend next steps.

Some students don’t have homework at all until they get to high school. Pilkey often gets calls from parents who are confused by the lack of home assignments and not knowing how their child fares relative to other kids in the class. Students have access through Google classroom or homework hubs to get help with schoolwork at no cost. Videos of teachers giving math lessons, for example, are available.
