The stress-free way to respond when your boss comes at you with a random idea
Stressful schedules and packed to-do lists: Workplace communication trainer Peter Rach says it's understandable that employees' stress levels increase when the boss constantly throws new ideas at them.
Having said that, it's wise to make the boss feel heard."If they have many ideas, they naturally want something to happen with those thoughts," Rach said. Writing down ideas given verbally can help. If the boss sends suggestions via email, collect these in a folder. Sabine Remdisch, a professor of personnel and organizational psychology at Leuphana University Lüneburg, said a boss who is open to ideas embodies an innovative work culture. Fostering"psychological safety" – where employees and leaders equally feel comfortable bringing forth their suggestions and ideas without fear of criticism or sanctions – is essential.
At the same time, it's about finding a good balance between exploring ideas and exploiting them."Idea development goes hand in hand with idea exploitation. These are two factors of the same system," said Remdisch."Ambidextrous leadership" is a core competency of innovative leaders, she added.
