When the townspeople of Oberammergau, Germany promised God they would put on a Passion Play every decade, they were just hoping to be spared from a deadly plague. In the 400 years since, that tradition has brought people together from far and wide and holds lessons for every era in our world.
Every 10 years, the town of Oberammergau, Germany, puts on a play — but it's not just your usual community theatre production; this one has an important promise attached to it.
I understand that you and Christian Stückl, the director, met when you were 11 years old and he was instrumental in pulling you into the production and onto the stage. Do you remember that meeting? Now Judas, of course, is the man an audience will love to hate. Did you and Christian Stückl have some concern over casting the first Muslim in a prominent role as Judas?
Abdullah Karaca was deputy director of the Passion Play in Oberammergau, alongside longtime director Christian Stuckl.There was a text in our Passion Play referring to wars in our world … but you feel like with the war in Ukraine, it's closer to us. And people listen automatically differently to this kind of text. [We] also show that Jesus is going to the places where others don't go and mentioned people where others don't look, and he wanted to go places and fight for their rights.
