How the shortage of drugs used to treat cancer is impacting care in Rochester region

A shortage of a pair of common chemotherapy drugs is forcing doctors to switch medications and delay care. One doctor tells us companies don't have the same incentive to produce these drugs compared to newer ones, mostly due to ease of access to supply.

A growing shortage of common cancer treatments is forcing doctors to switch medications and delaying care, prominent U.S. cancer centers say. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network said Wednesday, June 7, 2023, that nearly all the centers it surveyed in late May 2023 were dealing with shortages of the chemotherapies carboplatin and cisplatin.
