Five veteran New York journalists sued for age and gender discrimination and, in the process, are looking to facilitate a new conversation on workplace inequality.

When talking about ageism, Thomas added, gender—as it does in this lawsuit—is also likely to come into play. “Age discrimination in combination with gender discrimination is exceptionally common in media,” she said. Torre, Lee, Farinacci, Ramirez and Shaughnessy, who detail that they’ve had “more than 100 years of collective experience” and have been recipients of multiple awards, attempt to make their collective talent clear. Nevertheless, the June 19 lawsuit accuses Charter Communications of still “dramatically” reducing their on-air time and anchoring opportunities, and goes on to detail how their “prime-time reporting roles had been taken away and promotional efforts have vanished.
