The King’s coffin had been taken from Sandringham to London in a railway carriage and was transported to Westminster Hall in a grand procession that was televised for the first time.
Three generations of royals mourned the passing of George VI after he died in February 1952
But many expected him to pull through, including the new Queen herself who was half a world away when the new broke having embarked on a royal trip to Kenya a week before. The death of any monarch – known in this case by the codename Hyde Park Corner – is always rigorously planned and rehearsed but the heir being overseas complicated matters initially.
‘When the death of the King was announced to us yesterday morning there struck a deep and solemn note in our lives which, as it resounded far and wide, stilled the clatter and traffic of twentieth-century life in many lands, and made countless millions of human beings pause and look around them’, he said.
Awaiting him at King’s Cross station had been the new Queen Elizabeth II, George’s widow Elizabeth, now known as the Queen Mother, and his mother, Queen Mary – a rare coming together of three generations of royals all clad in black mourning clothes.
