The first Canadian clinical trial of a potential COVID-19 vaccine will be fast-tracked, allowing it to potentially be completed in a much shorter time frame than the usual five to seven years.
a clinical trial for a potential COVID-19 vaccine
Halperin is the director of the Canadian Center for Vaccinology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, which has been approved to begin trials of the vaccine candidate known as Ad5-nCoV. In the first phase, which Halperin said will require up to 100 volunteer participants, the researchers' focus will be less about how the vaccine candidate fights the virus than how humans respond to it in general.
If preliminary data suggests the potential vaccine is safe for humans, the test will move into its second phase, for which hundreds more volunteers of all ages will be needed, without waiting for the full six-month testing period to finish.
