“When I was in the hospital bed, I knew that there were freezer trucks outside that were holding bodies,' says Melanie Carmichael feels like she's been given a second chance as her recovery from COVID-19 continues. By WS_DianeCrocker SaltWire

Two years after surviving COVID-19 Newfoundland-born Melanie Carmichael is still recovering but doing great. Carmichael lives in Harlingen, Texas. - ContributedIt’s been just over two years since Melanie Carmichael was wheeled out of a Texas hospital to the cheers of nurses, doctors and other healthcare workers.

Today, her recovery continues, and Carmichael feels like she’s been given a second chance and is still here for a reason. But she knows there is still a way to go before she is fully recovered, and she’s not willing to settle for anything else. After the inpatient rehabilitation, she completed 18 weeks of outpatient rehab, never giving up on that feeling that she could do more.

Her lungs are now clear of any signs of fibrosis, she walks with a cane because her feet are still numb, and her gait is off.She especially enjoys visiting her favourite beach, where she said all her stress falls away. “And I think it impacted me to realize how people respond and how positive they are, how caring they are when somebody goes through something like this,” she said.
