The row over rights of a transgender rapist has prompted accusations that the Scottish government had misjudged public sentiment.
“This crisis has damaged Nicola Sturgeon’s ability to be seen as a unifying figure for the independence movement,” said Anthony Salamone, managing director of European Merchants, a think-tank. “This is a signature policy that [she] advocated.”
A senior SNP member said divisions over gender policy had become the “biggest crisis” of Sturgeon’s leadership and a “car crash” for the party. They added that the crisis was emblematic of a leadership style that did not tolerate opposing views. That such a significant portion of SNP voters sided with the government in London was “striking”, said Emily Gray, Scotland managing director at Ipsos. “These findings suggest this is a divisive issue for those who support the SNP.”
Meanwhile, Sturgeon’s critics within the party argue that while its 2016 manifesto mentioned reforming gender recognition law it did not specify gender self-identification.Article content
