How Outdoor Pride, a 2019 ForbesSmallGiants listmaker, is going green and investing in its community:
Mark Aquilino, president of Outdoor Pride Landscape & Snow Management in Manchester, New Hampshire, says his company insists on a triple bottom line—accounting for people, planet and profit. That’s one of the virtues that made the business one of 25 companies onAquilino took over Outdoor Pride, which as its name suggests provides landscaping and snow removal services, in April 2015; it was founded by his parents in 1988 and serves much of New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts.
He’s also working to cut down on the employee turnover that’s endemic in companies that do what Outdoor Pride does. “That used to frustrate me, as we were growing a small business. Because if you have to retrain most of your workforce every single year, it just becomes daunting and monotonous,” he says. He has worked intensely on improving his staff’s connections to one another and to the company, and he has been succeeding.
He describes Outdoor Pride as “a team of dedicated and diverse professionals” who are committed to cultivating “effective and sustainable relationships with our employees, clients and community.” He has especially encouraged the community connection. In February 2019 he launched the Aquilino Foundation, whose purpose, he says, “is to give charitable contributions with a local and community-based approach.” He started it with $25,000 of family money and will add more every year.
Already the foundation has partnered with the Boys & Girls Club in Manchester to fund a literacy program, and much more is on the way. “I believe our core family values ensure that we can help impact the communities where we work, live and play for the better,” Aquilino says. He has shown that he’s trying to do just that.I serve as an assistant editor on the Leadership team at Forbes.
