The mystery surrounding the gay hate crime murder of Scott Johnson has been one of Australia's most puzzling and emotionally charged.
The first, in 1989, found Mr Johnson committed suicide — something his brother and family had always disputed.
Strike Force Welsford was set up soon after by NSW Police, led by Detective Chief Inspector Peter Yeomans.had fought long and hard to break through a wall of silence involving two groups with information – those who were involved in the attack and those who were told.During the final inquest, it was also uncovered how police failed to investigate many gay hate crimes that took place in Sydney over decades, despite many reports.
The inquest was also told that soldiers at the Army School of Artillery at North Head used to brag about attacking gay men and considered it "fun and games". "For the dozens of other gay men who lost their lives in the 1980s and '90s, in a world full of anti-gay prejudice and hatred," he said.
