Galaxy's mightiest heroes.
The last year of Star Trek comics have been some of the best in franchise history, thanks in part to the huge influence Marvel’s Avengers has had on IDW’s new line of Star Trek titles. Not only did IDW produce Trek’s first ever comics' crossover, Day of Blood, but the line also earned two Eisner nominations – another first for the franchise.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT At San Diego Comic-Con, the creative team behind these rejuvenated Star Trek comics revealed the Avengers role in inspiring their take on Trek. Speaking with ScreenRant, Star Trek co-writer Jackson Lanzing discussed building the "shared universe" of IDW's Star Trek, one that allows or different types of books, such as an Avengers-like title, or Dark Avengers or even a Teen Titans comic.
Captain Sisko Leads Star Trek's Version Of The Avengers Star Trek premiered on television on September 8th, 1966, making its comics debut a year later. Since then, many major publishers, including Marvel and DC, have held the comic rights to Star Trek. IDW acquired the license in 2007, but it wasn't until 2022 that they gave the line a much-needed shot in the arm, with the publication of Star Trek #400, a one-shot that seeded the epic God-War storyline.
By emphasizing high-stakes story-telling, IDW has raised the bar for all Star Trek comics moving forward, and part of this success can be attributed to the influence of the Avengers on writers Kelly and Lanzing, as well as IDW's commitment to their vision of Trek storytelling. Initially formed to take down a Loki-possessed Hulk, Marvel's premiere superteam, the Avengers, have since faced down foes as powerful as Thanos, Kang, Knull and the Beyonder.
More importantly, Avengers stories matter; Avengers stories can have long term ramifications upon individual members of the team, and throughout the Marvel Universe. Previous Star Trek comics lacked these stakes, making for comics that were often well done, but ultimately had no bearing on the franchise, and thus led to little emotional investment on part of the readers.
