Author Wendy Thomas Russell owns and operates the small publishing house that shines a spotlight on traditionally underrepresented minorities.

It took author Cheryl E. Klein about seven years to write her first memoir.

Wendy Russell, founder of Brown Paper Press, shows us her ninth release, Crybaby, along with the IPA documentary first place winner, Hidden, at Page Against the Machine in Long Beach, CA, on Saturday, September 17, 2022. “My goal is to make a difference with the books I publish,” said Russell, who runs Brown Paper Press from her Long Beach home. “I’m very interested right now in publishing marginalized voices and hearing from people who need and deserve a platform.”

“While I was finishing my full-length book, I started to learn more and more about the publishing industry and had some disheartening experiences and knew other authors who were having these experiences as well,” she said. Instead of shopping her memoir around, Russell decided to publish her first book herself – and Brown Paper Press was born.

“Our missions align very similarly. A focus of the store is also to give a voice to what has been traditionally underrepresented or oppressed minorities,” said Giaco. “I think a press like Wendy’s is vital now more than ever to make sure those voices don’t get lost.”
