The compromise was undoubtedly a relief for theater makers, as the Tony Awards broadcast serves as an important marketing tool for Broadway—especially while the industry is still facing economic headwinds in the wake of the pandemic. “I think so much of what we all learned is that rebuilding is an ongoing process, that we will continue to strive to be the community we all want to be—the art form we all want to be, the way of working we all want to experience, and the relationship with each other and our audiences that we want to be part of,” Roth says. “So, I continue to be really excited and inspired by the path we’ve all been taking together since reopening, and the path ahead.
