House Speaker Mike Jonson and GOP leadership are bringing a long-awaited package on aid for Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific on Saturday.
by CHRISTOPHER WHITE | The National DeskSpeaker of the House Mike Johnson , R-La., talks with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., before Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida addresses a joint meeting of Congress in the House chamber, Thursday, April 11, 2024, at the Capitol in Washington. House Speaker Mike Jonson and GOP leadership are bringing a long-awaited vote on aid for Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific sometime on Saturday.
The loan idea was first suggested by former President Donald Trump, something other Republican lawmakers are supporting. Johnson also argues the House package would, if passed, require Biden to come up with a strategy for what the administration aims to accomplish in Ukraine. Whatever the president comes up with in terms of a strategy must be presented within 45 days of the bill being signed into law.Johnson was voted into leadership after his predecessor, now-former Rep.
“We’re going to force him into a monogamous relationship with one or the other,” Gaetz said at the time, referring to the Republicans and Democrats McCarthy relied on for passage. “What we’re not going to do is hang out with him for five months and then watch him go jump in the back seat with Hakeem Jeffries and sell the nation out.
House Republicans have been demanding the same Senate request for border aid on top of a supplemental bill ever since. The Senate bill remained stalled until Speaker Johnson suggested a proposal was coming this weekend, roughly a week after Iran lodged one of the largest airborne attacks on Israel.Biden has already endorsed the package, as have many congressional Republicans.
