It all started with one line.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT According to The Continental executive producer Basil Iwanyk, Winston's upcoming spinoff series came about as a result of one line in the first John Wick movie. Released in 2014, the first movie in the franchise became a surprise hit, introducing audiences to Keanu Reeves' titular assassin and Ian McShane's Winston, the manager of the New York City Continental hotel.
Ahead of The Continental's premiere date this weekend, Iwanyk revealed during a recent press event that Winston has one line in the original John Wick movie that served as a starting point for the upcoming spinoff. Check out Iwanyk's full explanation below regarding how the series came about: "The irony is that the whole show was based on an Easter egg from the first movie, which I don't even remember. Apparently, Winston says, 'I've been a member of this institution,' or 'I've been running this place for 35 years,' and that was the premise of the writers coming in and saying, 'You know that line in 'John Wick?' And we're like, 'We don't remember that line.
While there's always a risk in pulling back the curtain and removing the mystery, The Continental has an opportunity to flesh out one of the franchise's most important characters. If the show gets it right, Winston will be made even more interesting in the movies, with his various characteristics and qualities becoming richer as a result of the new context that the show adds.
What's more, Winston doesn't often engage in any violence in the John Wick movies , giving The Continental an opportunity to add a more ragged edge to the character. It's hard to imagine Winston gaining his power and surviving as long as he has without getting his hands dirty, and the new show can finally show us what he was capable of as a younger man.
