Ruth Mayer adores Israel and reminisces fondly every chance she gets; she also hopes for a future of peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
There were countless moments of curfew and sirens warning of possible bombings. Mayer and her family sometimes spent days in a makeshift shelter with the neighbors. "As a kid, I loved the curfew days because there was no school. And we had to go to the shelters. And my mother bought better food — sweets," Mayer laughed."I remember that was the first time I had a whole wheat raisin roll; my mother always bought it when there was curfew time.
She said the antisemitism wasn't only from the Arabs; the British, she said, were often the worst offenders. "I remember they used to eat watermelon and salt. Some things you don't forget," Mayer said."And I always questioned, why do they put salt on watermelon?"when five Arab nations invaded the territory in the former Palestinian Mandate following the announcement of the independence of the state of Israel. Though the United Nations eventually brokered two cease-fires, fighting continued into 1949 before armistice agreements were reached.
Mayer got married in 1958 to her late husband, Arye, who immigrated to Israel at eight years old from Romania. Pogroms forced Arye's family out of their home.
