How I Met Your Father brings back characters from original series: HowIMetYourFather
Co-creator Elizabeth Berger revealed that the idea to tie them into Sophie's story came"pretty early on", noting they were"excited by the idea that something mysterious would be happening… and it felt really exciting to have that mystery involve [established] characters, as opposed to random people".
"Kyle MacLachlan was in Australia doing another project — and with COVID, we had to have this back-pocket plan that it would have been a new invention of this affluent, New York socialite couple," Aptaker added."But our first choice, of course, was to use The Captain. The stars aligned, and we were able to get him on a plane back to Los Angeles."
He also said that MacLachlan was on board"right away", though it proved a"nail biter" as to whether it could work amid his other commitments and COVID.Speaking of keeping the appearance under wraps to everyone else, Aptaker explained:"We have a live feed that goes out to everyone who is working from home, so whenever we do bigger, secretive stuff like this, we cut the live feed so it's very limited in terms of who is able to see.
"But I will say, both Kyle and Laura do not age. They've got that Paul Rudd effect where it seems like whatever cream they put on at night has frozen them in time, so even if this was 40 years in the future, I'm not sure they'd look any different. They'd both look pretty incredible."
