Reuniting for their show Twohander, these Broadway stars reflect on a close work relationship that's lasted 23 years.

They first met in 1997 when Scott joined the cast of the musical. She had taken over for Idina Menzel. The show was hot. Butz wasn’t an original company member either. But he had already been in Rent covering one Sunday performance a week for Adam Pascal. “I was a utility player — a swing and Sunday night Roger. I also became Squeegee Man,” says Butz. “In a way we were the outcasts,” recalls Scott. “There were very few new people in the show other than the original cast.

While they only worked together for a few months they became really good friends. Two years later they starred in Jason Robert Brown’s beloved off Broadway production ofTime magazine named the production one of ten best shows of 2001. The rapturous musical brilliantly explores how a couple falls in and out of love over the course of five years. Throughout the entire show they were the only people on stage, which further solidified them.was transforming for them both.

Scott and Butz discovered a way to reflect and honor the specialness of those songs and their connection. They are reuniting for their much anticipated showwhich they are performing all this month at at Feinstein's/54 Below. Scott, who is also a talented scribe, wroteWith musical direction by Todd Almond, Scott and Butz share the story of their relationship from their fierce on-stage chemistry to navigating their joyful and complex connection off-stage.

We started just discussing the conception of the piece and how it was in my mind. I'm a writer and don''t verbalize things very well. But somehow he understood me. And Norbert said, “Ok, you write it” and gave it over to me. It ended up writing itself and became a play with music. And he didn't bail on me when I didn't know the ending.It ended up being deeply personal and universal, especially at this time.
