How do so many Quebec films make it to the Oscar live-action short category? Oscars
There’s something in the air. Or perhaps the snow? When writer-director Meryam Joobeur and producer Maria Gracia Turgeon wait for the Oscar winner for best live-action short film to be announced Sunday at L.A.’s Dolby Theatre, their project Brotherhood will be the third Quebec film in two years to compete for the award.
“It’s very crazy to find the same group of friends in this situation,” said Joobeur, who attended Concordia’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema with Comte and Boisjoli. Which brings us to the films themselves. Brotherhood is a strikingly powerful family drama, set in rural Tunisia. A Canada/Tunisia/Qatar/Sweden co-production, the Arabic-language tale explores tensions between father and son after the latter returns from fighting in Syria, with his new Syrian wife.
Asked to explain her good fortune at going to the Oscars two years in a row, Turgeon said there’s no trick. Danny Lennon won’t say he saw it coming, but he’s happy Oscar recognition has arrived for Quebec’s budding filmmakers.
