Garfield Heights residents who attended an Aug. 19 community meeting had mixed feelings about building a 1,904-bed jail on about 72 acres in their community. Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne and Garfield Heights Mayor Matthew Burke addressed their concerns.

“I have yet to find a county where they put a jail and it went down,” Burke said. “I think it would work out.”Paying for a new jail remains a chief concern, not just for Garfield Heights residents but all county taxpayers. “Some people come to the jail who have never seen any resources in the community,” prior to committing a crime, Ronayne responded. The jail could introduce them to those services to prevent them from reoffending later, he said.
