The Chiefs don't seem to be hindered at all by Patrick Mahomes' large contract. TheJoeMarino breaks down how Kansas City found a clear path to staying power at the top of the AFC and it all starts with the draft. ChiefsKingdom

Since Andy Reid took over in 2013, the Kansas City Chiefs have been incredibly successful. The Chiefs have won the AFC West in six consecutive seasons, hosted the last four AFC Championship games, reached three Super Bowls, and hoisted the Lombardi Trophy in 2019.signed a record-breaking 10-year, $450 million contract extension, many have wondered about the team’s ability to maintain a balanced roster around him with enough talent to stay such a dominant franchise.

First of all, Mahomes’ extension hasn’t prevented Kansas City from making Chris Jones, Joe Thuney, and Travis Kelce among the top-five highest-paid players at their respective positions and Justin Reid top-10 since Mahomes’ extension. Even Orlando Brown Jr., who is playing on the franchise tag, is among the top 10 highest-paid players at his position.

It’s also notable how quickly the Chiefs’ market-setting deal for Mahomes turned into a bargain. Since inking the deal in July of 2020, four quarterbacks—Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, and Deshaun Watson—received contracts that exceed Mahomes’ $45 million average annual salary with Josh Allen just a tick below at $43 million per season. Kansas City is far from being alone in the boat when it comes to committing significant cap space to a quarterback.

In the 2020 NFL Draft, which was just a few months prior to Mahomes’ extension in July of 2020, Veach landed starters in Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Willie Gay Jr., and rising star L’Jarius Sneed, not to mention a quality rotational defensive lineman in Michael Danna. Then, 2021 was some of Veach’s best work. After parting with their top pick to secure Brown Jr. at left tackle, the Chiefs landed impact starters in Nick Bolton, Creed Humphrey, and Trey Smith.

We’re still in the infancy stage of the development of players selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, but the early returns are promising from Kansas City’s class. In the Chiefs’ 44-21 opening week win over the Arizona Cardinals, the immediate contributions of the rookie class were impressive.
