How Boris Johnson's 20-year political rise went into sharp reverse amid a chorus of booing ⬇️ Boris Johnson has spent his political life angling for the top offices but his three years in Downing Street leave him on the brink of a harsh verdict
and the questions about how he dealt with allegations Mr Pincher drunkenly groped two men were just the latest stormy chapters in a tempestuous tenure inside Number 10, which began in July 2019 when he was the overwhelming choice of MPs and Conservative members to replace Theresa May as party leader and Prime Minister.
Born in New York as Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, he enjoyed something of an inexorable rise, surviving a peripatetic childhood to excel at Eton and Oxford before pointing himself first towards journalism and then politics. It is a persona built on a Teflon-coated facility with language which served him well from his early career as the Eurocrat-bashing Brussels correspondent ofThere are few politicians of any stripe who would get away with proclaiming to the nation, as Boris did while campaigning in the 2005 general election: “Voting Tory will cause your wife to have bigger breasts and increase your chance of owning a BMW M3.
Behind all this, Boris’s staunchest critics have spied not so much buffoonery as cold calculation – an allegedly entrenched, almost instinctual ability to seek advantage from any and every circumstance by which Mr Johnson, who as a child once expressed the desire to one day become “world king”, propelled himself into government and ultimately into Downing Street.
He was sacked as shadow arts minister in 2004 after he described the – entirely accurate – revelation of a long-running affair with the journalist Petronella Wyatt as an “inverted pyramid of piffle” and then refused to resign for lying. His supporters will argue that such a verdict skews the truth. The criticism that his Government presided over a disastrous initial approach to the pandemic is countered by the UK’s world-leading vaccination roll-out; the charge that he was a vacillating foreign secretary is rebutted with Britain’s staunch support of Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion.
