Zach OstermanBLOOMINGTON – Fred Heavilon traveled from his home in eastern Pennsylvania to Bloomington this weekend for the same reason a lot of people probably did.
Knight’s return, dramatic and emotional, began the way Indiana always hoped it would: with a reunion. "I think the fact that we had, this was organized by players as a rule, and that was one of the big things we wanted to make sure we did," Buckner said. "Randy and I pretty much were able to do that. When he moved back to Bloomington — “home,” former player Mike Woodson called it Saturday, where Knight “made all his marks” — the tide appeared to be turning.
“Somebody asked me when I knew it was going to happen, and I said, when coach Knight set foot on Branch McCracken Court,” Glass said. “ we had been preparing for this and planning it for weeks.” In the Assembly Hall bowl waited a sold-out crowd, 17,222 people. It held more when Knight still commanded the north sideline, before renovation and modernization touched up its rough edges. But the crowd in the stands still knew how to get loud.
"It was surreal," Buckner said. "I got emotional about it. I know he got emotional. Some of the players got emotional, and to be able to get us from the various decades to come back and do it was special."
