Anna Kendrick’s “Cups” is easily one of the most memorable parts of 2012’s Pitch Perfect, but what made it such a huge pop culture phenomenon?

Pitch Perfect’s soundtrack is one of the movie’s most enduring qualities, but Anna Kendrick's song "Cups" was the true breakout hit. As a musical comedy about a college a cappella group called the Barden Bellas, it makes sense that Pitch Perfect’s songs are central to the movie’s success. However, Beca’s Barden Bella audition song “Cups” has not only become one of the most popular songs from Pitch Perfect, but it has found mainstream success that transcends the movie altogether.

With lyrics borrowed from a 1931 Carter Family song, Lulu And The Lampshades eventually covered it and added the cup game element. Anna Burden covered The Lampshades’ version of the song in 2011, which went viral on Reddit, gaining over 2.37 million views, including one from Anna Kendrick.

Pitch Perfect's Cup Song Spent 44 Weeks On US Billboard's Hot 100 Chart Pitch Perfect’s “Cups” soared to huge heights following the movie’s release, including a long tenure on the Billboard charts and an impressive list of accolades. Debuting at number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, “Cups” eventually peaked at number 6 in August 2013 and spent an impressive 44 weeks on the chart.

In addition to its stellar performance on Billboard’s charts, “Cups” garnered many other achievements and records. “Cups” also gained nominations from both the Tony Awards and Academy Awards, making Anna Kendrick the second person after Barbra Streisand to achieve such a feat while having a song on the Billboard Hot 100. Eventually going triple platinum, selling 2.5 million downloads in the United States, “Cups” was the 21st biggest single of 2013.
