The only daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton brought priceless artworks to Bentonville, Arkansas. Now, she's taking on the establishment with ambitious expansion plans to make the museum—and the town—a world-class destination.
The founding member of Crystal Bridges, the decade-old museum in the foothills of Arkansas’s Ozark Mountains, is currently unavailable to give a tour because of a pre-existing laser appointment. Fortunately, the appointment is not for Alice Walton, the brains behind the museum and the only daughter of Sam Walton, billionaire founder of Walmart . The first member of the museum, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this fall, is Alice’s dog, Friday Walton.
“He is 14-and-a-half now, and so if laser treatments help his arthritis, he gets laser treatments,” she says, offering herself as a guide because tours are “my favorite thing to do in the world.” Friday showed up on Walton’s property when he was an orphaned puppy and has been her devoted companion ever since. “His perceptive mood and personality inspire me, and he has been on the journey [of building this museum] every bit of the way,” she says. “He is member No. 1; I am No. 2.
