Wayne native Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian will compete in the Beijing Olympics for Jamaica to honor the memory of her recently deceased sister.

last summer in Tokyo drove the point home that even the most elite athletes are human. If not, Fenlator-Victorian is prepared to arrive in Beijing this week wearing her grief on her shoulder.

It all paid off in 2014. Fenlator-Victorian was part of the most diverse bobsled team that took a celebrity turn with hurdler Lolo Jones on her team. They finished 11th at the Sochi Games, an accomplishment that signaled bigger things were to come. In 2013, a few months before her trip to the Sochi Games, Hurricane Irene destroyed the family’s house in Wayne, forcing Suzie and Angelica to live in their car for a few days and a hotel for months. Suzie was in and out of hospitals, suffering a series of strokes and heart attacks as a result from her three-decade struggle with lupus.

She made a break from the sport in 2015, settling first in Las Vegas and then in Dallas. But the International Olympic Committee’s decision to add a new event — a single-rider competition called— gave her another opportunity to be a trailblazer for Jamaica. She threw herself back into the sport, taking on a grueling seven-week schedule with 16 races in hopes of qualifying for Beijing.
