Mary Katherine Backstrom recently published her latest nonfiction work, “Crazy Joy: Finding Wild Happiness in a World That’s Upside Down.” Her previous books include 2021′s “Holy Hot Mess” and “Mom Babble” from 2020.
Backstrom was already a popular blogger in winter 2019 when she posted a video on her Facebook page. In the video, she recounts a humorous story where she mistakenly thought a man was cleaning the window of her SUV. A holiday season good deed. In fact, the man was cleaning off his own car window. Thatvideo went viral and has been viewed around a 100 million times. That led to an appearance on popular daytime talk show “Ellen” and things took off from there.
A Huntsville resident, Backstrom recently donated around $20,000 from proceeds from her latest book to the National Children’s Advocacy Center. The funds will help survivors of childhood sexual abuse receive free therapy services. On a recent morning, Backstrom’s publicist connected us for a 20-minute phone interview. Edited excerpts below.
