How a daily Zoom meditation group transformed this writer's life
, he had learned, and after a lot of prodding I grudgingly went along with the class. I believe it did improve my experience, helping me overcome my fear and empathize with my terrified parents, as well as bounce back to health. But I didn’t stick with it. It was only years later, after running one business, a publishing company, and starting another, my own jewelry line, that I turned to it again.
The format is simple. We log on at 5 p.m. or shortly before, chat for a couple of minutes and then, using tools from regression and hypnosis, I guide the group to a deep level of stillness. But the real surprise is that taking the meditation into our homes, rather than an external place we prepare ourselves to go to, brings out the goofball in each of us. Here’s why:
The commitment to 5 p.m., seven days a week, drastically lowers the bar on how we show up. Everyone starts with the camera off, as if to preserve a little dignity . But as the weeks pass, one by one we sacrifice appearance. Every one of us has done car meditation , either pulling over to the side of the road or in the passenger seat with someone else driving. Most of us have fallen asleep and some of us snore .
Zoom brings the meditators into our private spaces, where we witness one another’s weirdnesses and vulnerability. This one has a hat, that one lies down. The one in the lower right box has a cat and that one likes to rip the sheetrock off her walls. We mostly don’t know one another well, but all of our strangeness is contained within the feelings meditation fosters of acceptance and compassion, both of which bring laughter and ease to the surface.
