Jason Redmond, 43, has numerous criminal convictions while an OPP cop, including raping an unconscious woman.

His former colleagues say he was a good police officer while on the job. “Jason was a hardworking and capable police officer,” said a former colleague, who did not want to be named. “He conducted thorough investigations and was an excellent report writer. He had gained a lot of knowledge working with the courts.”After a few years on the frontlines, Redmond’s work absences started piling up, and he went on long-term sick leave for months at a time.

Redmond first hit the headlines in 2015, when he was charged as part of Project Arrowtown, a local sting operation targeting illegal drug activity. He was arrested Nov. 12, 2015, and charged with obstruction of justice, three counts of trafficking marijuana, one count of forgery, and one count of breach of trust.

Those who know him paint the same picture: He liked to party, was obsessed with his body image and impressed by status symbols. Redmond responded by filing a human rights complaint in 2020, alleging the police agency harassed him because of his mental health challenges. In his filing, Redmond said the OPP failed to accommodate his psychological disabilities and continued to harass him because of these disabilities. The case has yet to be heard by the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal.Article content

The judge found that the victim “did not consent to the sexual touching either because she was unconscious or she was incapable of consenting.” He was convicted this past February.Simultaneously, the OPP was working on a separate assault case against Redmond involving a second woman. Redmond was initially charged with 17 offences in that case, but six of the charges were dropped before making it to trial. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.

During a sentencing hearing in May for the 2017 sexual assault, Stein said Redmond’s friends, including some police officers, say he used to be a “good guy,” but that his personality changed in the past few years. He was taken to the Lanark detachment and lodged in a cell, the report continues. In the morning, he complained of shortness of breath and was taken by ambulance to the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on April 8, 2015. He was 63. The SIU determined the OPP did not cause or contribute to his death.
