“These films, where else are you going to see them? Nowhere,” HLFF director Dave Cebrero said. “At least not in Houston.”The festival was founded in 2016 by Cebrero, operations director David Cortez and program director Pedro Rivas and is meant to address the disparities Latinos face in the film industry by showcasing their work.
So far, attendance at the festival has been great, he added. He was especially encouraged by the non-Latino attendees who wanted to learn more about the culture. She cleared her calendar for this year’s festival, which began Wednesday evening with a reception for “On Identity,” an art exhibit by Houston-based Argentine artist Karen Navarro that explores immigrant diasporas. Scott plans on being there until Sunday, when a variety of filmmakers will be in attendance for post-screening discussions.
