Houston gasoline prices fell below $3 a gallon Monday, bucking a rise in gas prices nationally.
Elizabeth Conley, Houston Chronicle / Staff photographerThe average cost of gasoline in the region fell about 3 cents over the past week to $2.97 a gallon, 35 cents a gallon lower than a month ago, but 25 cents a gallon higher than a year ago, according to the fuel-price tracking service GasBuddy.
Nationally, the average price of gasoline rose for the first time in 15 weeks, due to refinery outages in the Midwest and along the West Coast that sent prices rising sharply in those regions. The national average rose 3 cents a gallon over the week to $3.67, down 18 cents a gallon from a month ago, but up 49 cents from a year ago.The refinery issues offset a steep decline in crude prices, which ended last week below $80 a barrel for the first time since January.
"A slew of unexpected refinery disruptions, including fires and routine maintenance, have seemingly all happened in a short span of time, causing wholesale gas prices to spike in areas of the West Coast, Great Lakes and Plains states," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy."In addition, as Tropical Storm Ian nears the U.S. coast, some refiners could see limited disruption.
