In a way, “Asteroid City” feels like a film Wes Anderson has worked toward his whole life. He’s worked diligently to create insular worlds with each film.

Anderson points out that he’s eight years older today than Bill Murray was when he played a melancholic businessman in “Rushmore.”
To hear Anderson tell it, the film’s format speaks to a lifelong interest in theater and theatrical actors going back to the St. John's School alumus' youth in Houston. “I’m susceptible to the whole mystique and allure of the theater,” he says. “The smell of greasepaint. I love a backstage story. I love the theater, but it’s not my world. I remember watching from the fourth row of a theater wishing I was watching from the wings somewhere.
