Houston coach Kelvin Sampson nets more than $200,000 in bonuses with 2022-23 success
University of Houston men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson has earned more than $200,000 in bonuses since the end of the regular season.
Sampson triggered four bonuses in his contract for winning the American Athletic Conference regular season title, getting the Cougars to the NCAA Tournament, winning league coach of the year and finishing in the top 25 in the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls, according to contract details obtained through an open-records request.
The biggest bonus was a $100,000 increase in additional compensation for making the NCAA Tournament. Sampson earned $25,000 for winning the AAC regular season title, $20,000 for a final top 25 ranking and $10,000 for being named the league’s coach of the year. The Cougars’ win over Auburn in the round of 32 netted Sampson an extra $50,000.He can also earn an additional $37,500 for certain academic and season-ticket requirements.
