Voters will decide whether to sign off on roughly $3.8 billion in bonds on the ballot Tuesday to build and improve schools across the Houston region.
Students pass between classes at Lamar CISD's Terry High School in Rosenberg, Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019.Voters must decide whether to sign off on roughly $3.8 billion in bonds on the ballot Tuesday to build and improve schools, including major security overhauls, in several expanding suburban districts across the Houston region.
Until recently, school bonds were almost certain to pass, regardless of cost or scope, said Bob Stein, a professor of political science at Rice University who has studied the political implications of school bonds for almost 50 years.“The world is changing,” Stein said. “Before 2020, a bond election from the school district invariably passed, regardless of politics, because public schools are very important. ...
“What you're beginning to see is that the partisan polarization is going to affect the bonds, and when it does, I think the business community of builders and contractors are going to stop building houses,” Stein said. “Bottom line, if you stop building schools, you can’t attract and retain productive capital and labor.”
Lindsey Ewers, one of the bond committee members, said she worries what would happen if the bond fails.
